THOUGHTFUL TUESDAY

Time out for Mom

If you could be immortal for one day; what would you do?  -

Leslie has us thinking again! Being immortal or living forever? One day is not enough! Could I have a month or a year? Could I be immortal forever?

There is so much to see and do. I could visit Australia and New Zealand with out the fear of flying. I could cruise around the world. I wouldn’t need to buy medical insurance to leave the country.

I want to see my grandchildren graduate from University and get married. I would love to babysit my great grandchildren and watch them grow up.

I would like to know that I would not grow old. Growing old is painful. All those little aches and pains. No arthritis, Alzheimer's or dementia.

I think everyone wishes for immortality at some point in their lives. I will keep on wishing.

SUNDAY IN THE CITY

Let’s travel the world together!

I can’t believe it is fall. Our weather feels more like summer. However our walk in our favourite park shows us the signs of fall.

FRIDAY FRAMENTS & FOUR FILL-IN FUN

Half-Past Kissin' Time

Feeling Beachie

I haven’t much to frag about this week. It has been the usual with babysitting the grands on Wednesday and going to visit my parents yesterday. I took my Mom shopping while DH watched my Dad and cleaned up my mother’s computer. The drive itself was full of construction. It took us an extra hour to get home.

We are preparing for our trek south next week. We have decided to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway and hopefully enjoy some fall colours. DH has booked the hotels going down. It looks like our summer will be extended because the temperatures in South Carolina are still very high.

This week I participated in the Tuesday Coffee Chat with Rory Bore. The topic was “collections”. I forgot to mention that we collect air miles as well as points for free hotel stays. If you have time please check out her website http://amothersluv.blogspot.ca/

The other shout out is for a blog I follow on Thursday. It is hosted by Brenda and is called Pondering. She takes words with multiple meanings each week. One Japanese blogger uses this blog to improve her English and show us Japanese words and writings. The blog is http://bygadventures.blogspot.ca/

This week’s co-host is DONETTA from MY CONSTANT THOUGHT – she came up with the last two statements

The statements:

  1. I knit or crochet when I watch TV.
  2. Apples are my favourite fruit for baking pies.
  3. Enjoying the sunshine is my favorite part of summer
  4. Reading helps me relax.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

THRIVING THURSDAY

 photo image13_zps64a48e1e.png

It’s time to Ponder with Brenda.

Today's word is CROSS

I am going to cross my fingers and hope for a safe journey to visit my parents today. I also cross my fingers and pray for my children and grandchildren. Do you cross your fingers or even your toes?

I try not get cross at the people around me who make me angry. Maybe I deserve it sometimes.

It is important to teach the children to cross the road safely. Look both ways and don’t jump out between parked cars. It is so easy to forget when you are chasing a ball.

I hope no one has a cross to bear. I will wear a cross on my necklace instead.

I will cross this off my list as well.

Don’t be cross with anyone today and hopefully you ponder with Brenda as well.

WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE

1. It's fall. Y'all. My favorite season of the year! What's something you love to do this time of year that makes you feel it's officially fall? And unrelated to that, do you ever say-'y'all'?

Canada celebrates its Thanksgiving in October. I love the whole dinner of turkey and pumpkin pie with the family. This year we will celebrate with our daughter H who also celebrates her birthday at the same time.

I love Halloween as well. We still decorate the outside of the house and love to give out the candy to the little ones. We actually have a mini street party as well.

I love to walk in the fallen leaves. The sound is fantastic.

2. When did you last have a falling out with someone? Has it been resolved?

It has been a very long time ago. I am the peace maker in the family so I hope everything is resolved.

3. A song you love with the word 'fall' in it's title?

I thought of 2 “Can’t help falling in love” and “Raindrops keep falling on my head”

4. What's something you've recently let 'fall by the wayside?'

I have let my swimming fall by the wayside. The pool I use is closed for the month of September and I didn’t bother looking for another place.

5. When did you last attend an event, read a book, watch a movie, try a new recipe, or visit a shop-town-tourist attraction that fell short of your expectations? In what way?

I would have to say a book I read fell short of my expectations. Fortunately it was not one I had to review and I just picked up another one and enjoyed it immensely.

6. Describe a time you said or thought, 'The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."

I say it all of the time. When I see my grandchildren in action I relive the antics of my own children. It is amazing that they act the same way as their parents did when they were children. My mother always wished I would have a daughter just like me and I got one.

7. Was today better than yesterday? Why or why not?

Every day is a good day especially when we don’t have to go to work. Being retired has made our days very easy. Yes some days are more active however for the other days we like to rest.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I want to wish my SIL P a very happy birthday. We will celebrate on Sunday with a quiet dinner and maybe a game of cards. We might even let him win. I am off to play with my grandchildren today and to visit my parents tomorrow. We are looking forward to a nice weekend as well.

THOUGHTFUL TUESDAYS

Time out for Mom

Leslie is back with Tuesday Coffee Chat and it is my pleasure to join in. I have missed the opportunity to share my thoughts. Leslie comes up with wonderful ideas for us to work with. This week it is all about

Collections

Over the years I have collected many things. I have a spoon collection which dates back to my years as a Brownie. My first spoon was an award for selling the most Girl Guide cookies. I collected spoons on my travels through Europe the year before I got married. Other have helped me with my spoon collection as well. Where is my spoon collection now? It is hidden away in a drawer and I am thinking of melting down the silver spoons especially those I used to have to clean.

I was an Avon lady for more than 10 years. During that time I got caught up in their idea of collecting. I collected perfume bottles as well beer steins. I have teddy bears, ducks, and Christmas decorations up my ying yang. Does anyone want them? No!!! They are just cluttering up my house and driving me crazy. Unfortunately I spent a lot of hard earned money on them so I can’t throw them away.

My son M has a baseball card collection in the old trunk. It was supposed to be worth a lot of money and would help him pay for school, however everyone bought the cards and no one else wants to buy them. I suppose they would make a good fire.

D H has his father’s stamp collection. It too sits in a drawer with the promise of getting around to it. Yeah right!!

I am back to collecting yarn for the many projects I might make some day. Thankfully when I returned to knitting I still had all of the patterns I had collected over the years. I have several sets of knitting needles some dating back to my grandmother’s time. I have one of the original Beehive knitting books which was also my grandmother’s.

There are also all of the books that have been collected over the years. I collect jewellry as well as shoes. We have a collection of photo albums from both D H’s parents and mine as well as our own. They will hopefully be useful when I can’t remember although there are people in some of the albums that we don’t know.

Who is going to want my silver-plated dinner set or my Royal Albert dishes and the cornflower crystal that is stored in my china cabinet? The future generation doesn’t want it because it is not dishwasher or microwavable.

Oh well I thought collecting was interesting at the time however I knew then what I know now I would have saved my money for another cruise.

Do you collect? Join Leslie and her blog.

MEET ME ON MONDAY

Acting Balanced

Welcome to Monday Quiz About Me - hosted by Heather & Wayne from Acting Balanced.  We are continuing to answer questions together.

Here are the Questions:

1. September is Better Breakfast month - so tell us what you had for breakfast today?

My usual breakfast consists of orange juice, coffee, half a grapefruit and a bowl of cornflakes or rice krispies.

2. Yesterday was Miniature Golf Day - did you partake?  Do you golf, miniature or regular?

It has been years since I have miniature golfed. We used to play with the kids. As far as regular golf I only played once and it was not good. I am a Mark Twain aficionado when it comes to golf - `Golf is a good walk spoiled``

3. Today is Elephant Appreciation Day - do you appreciate elephants?

I think elephants are wonderful beasts. I have only seen them in the zoo.

4. Next Sunday is "Ask a Stupid Question Day" - what will you ask?

Most of my questions are stupid so I guess I will continue to ask them.

And here is my 5th Question:

Today is the last day of summer, did you get everything done you wanted to do´.

FRIDAY FRAGMENTS & FOUR FILL IN FUN

Half-Past Kissin' Time                 feelingbeachiebutton 200x200

This has been a very busy week. I was out for lunch on both Monday and Tuesday. I had a wonderful time catching up with my friends and sharing our summer stories. Wednesday was my day with the grandchildren. We had a lot of fun and I went to bed by 9:30pm. While I was out DH managed to strip the dining room table as well as fill the gutters with a new guard he picked up at Home Depot.

I got a bag of books and I am looking forward to reading some more although I miss being able to sit outside and read in the sunshine.

We are looking forward to a fun weekend. I have a fashion show to attend. My sister B is going to be one of the models. Her husband J is going to take pictures. We also have a dance on Saturday night to kick off our new dance sessions. We hope to improve on our Argentine Tango.

I got a little more blogging in this week. I was able to visit with Heather at actingbalanced as well as fromthissideofthepond for Wednesday Hodge Podge. Of course it was Pondering with Brenda on Thursday. I also participate in Six word Saturday and Sunday in the City. If you haven’t seen these bloggers you should try a visit sometime.

Have a great weekend everyone.

This week’s co-host is ELIZABETH from SILVERS BOOK REVIEWS – she came up with the last two statements:

The statements:

  1. I am happy to be retired and can spend time with my grandchildren.
  2. I don’t like to drive  alone especially on long trips.
  3. Would you appear on a TV show if you could?
  4. Cooking with my hubby is something to be desired.

THRIVING THURSDAY

 photo image13_zps64a48e1e.png

Time to Ponder yet again with Brenda!

Today's word is TREAD

I am so glad that I am no longer on the treadmill called work. Get up, go to work, come home, have dinner, go to bed. Get up the next day and do the same things again. Retirement gives me the freedom to do what I like, when I want to. I do like some routine but every day can be different.

Do you change your tires in the winter? The treads on summer tires are not as wide as those in the winter. If you live where there is lots of snowy highways you should have snow tires.

I tread lightly when giving advice. Not everyone has the same circumstances and my opinion is not necessarily going to work. One piece of advice I do give is to young mothers. Sleep when the baby sleeps.

Everyone should be treated equally and not be tread on. I try to tread on other’s toes, however I will tread water.

Do you tread?

WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE

1. I'm celebrating a birthday this week so a question relating to aging feels appropriate. Douglas MacArthur is quoted as saying, 'You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair." Would you agree? If not why not?

I prefer “you are as young as you feel” and some days that is old and other days that is very young. I know I would never want to be back in my 20’s and 30’s. Middle age were my best years and retirement years are excellent.

2. What remarkable feat, interesting piece of trivia, or historical event occurred on your birth day and month? Not necessarily in your birthyear, just the same date/same month.

I looked it up on Google and my birthdate was pretty boring. I do share my birthday with Elizabeth Taylor and a dear friend of mine.

3. Describe a time or circumstance where you wanted to 'have your cake and eat it too.'

Now! I am retired and would love to have all of the money to be able to do everything I want especially cruising. Time is no longer an issue although while cruising I would be away from my grandchildren so I would have to take them with me a few times a year.

4. What's something you do that makes you feel young? Something that makes you feel old?

Looking after my grandchildren keeps me young. I enjoy sharing the old fashioned games with them. I feel old when I can’t keep up with them especially when it comes to their technical gadgets.

5. When did you last do something that was 'a piece of cake'?

I had to think long and hard for this one. I don’t do anything hard these days.

6.  Beef, wine, and cheese all improve with age. What's something else you'd add to that list? (not necessarily food or beverage)

Love!

7. If I were to have a giveaway when we hit Volume 200, what should I give away? By my calculations we'll hit Volume 200 on November 26th, the day before Thanksgiving, which means whoever wins would have whatever it is in time for Christmas.

What about a basket full of hodge podge since that is the theme of your blog. A little of this and a little of that.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

This has been a busy week as our activities are getting back into the swing of things. My granddaughter E complained that recess was boring. I suggested she take a skipping rope to school however she was told it is a hazard and not allowed in the school yard. Tall slides have also been closed down. Hard balls can also prove dangerous. How did we survive to adulthood with all of the dangerous activities we pursued?

It is definitely time to put away the summer clothes and get out the sweaters and slacks. I am even wearing a jacket. Summer is gone and Fall has arrived. Cool mornings and nights and some sunshine during the day.

I hope everyone has a good week!

THOUGHTFUL TUESDAY

There always seem to be lots of time to think. Thinking about the day ahead and getting everything done. Thinking about the weekend and spending time with the family. Thinking and contemplating the activities for next month. Thinking about our future cruises. We stay busy putting our thoughts together.

We love to think while we are out for a walk. Nature seems to inspire us.

IMG_5850

Wouldn’t this inspire you?

Yesterday was Respect-the=aged Day. It made me think of living longer. My parents are still alive and my grandson L turned the big 8. Are you prepared for the future? What do you want it to look like?

Hope everyone has a wonderful and thinks about their families and their future!

Acting Balanced

Welcome to Monday Quiz About Me - hosted by Heather & Wayne from Acting Balanced.  We are continuing to answer questions together.

Here are the Questions:

1. Today is MAKE A HAT day... Will you be participating?

No! I don’t wear too many hats because they give me a head ache.

2. September is National Chicken Month... Your favorite way to make/eat chicken?

I love chicken and will eat it most ways. I like chicken alfredo, chicken casserole, roast chicken. BBQ’d chicken and even leftover chicken.

3. Have you decorated for Autumn yet?

Not yet. Probably after the Canadian thanksgiving which is Columbus Day in the States.

4. Soup season is almost here... Do you make your own soups?  Have a favorite?

Absolutely! In fact we had beef vegetable soup on Saturday. We need more turkey stock and will make it soon.

My 5th question is:

Have you started baking for fall?

FRIDAY FRAGMENTS & FOUR FILL IN FUN

Half-Past Kissin' Time

Feeling Beachie

This week’s co-host is Obi from Eloquent Obi – she came up with all the statements:

The statements:

  1. The beach is a great walk from our house.
  2. Smartphones are okay however I still prefer my old fashioned flip phone.
  3. I like to play with my grandchildren. They keep me young.
  4. My dream of cruising would be fulfilled next year.

It is hard to believe that another has gone past. As I mentioned on Wednesday I have been watching my neighbour’s children before school in the morning. On Monday we got better acquainted and watched some tv. On Tuesday we played outside with chalk on the sidewalk. On Wednesday we got our the bubbles. It was wet on Thursday so we played cards. I have a deck of cards for a memory game. We had a lot of laughs. Today we played the card games again including a game called “slap jack”. We have also been taking the skipping rope to the bus stop. I have enjoyed my week with the kids.

I also babysat on Wednesday. I gave M’s Mom a break. She took the morning sit and I took over at lunch. It is wonderful to see the children growing up. F is loving school. T loves his special time without the girls. E is in grade one at her new school. Her biggest complaint is the washrooms. She says they are not very clean however she loves her teacher and her new friends. School is also too easy.

The weather is cooling down. I got out my jacket as well as my sweaters. I think it is time to put away the shorts and sandals although I may still need them for our upcoming visit to Charleston. It is still in the 40’s there.

D H has taken the dining room table apart and is removing the varnish. He will eventually restain it. In the meantime we have our old table up from the basement. It is in great shape considering it is over 65 years old. It was D H’s parents first table when they got married. We also still have the original chairs.

We are looking forward to a  retirement party on Saturday for our good friends M and D. Our friends M and N are coming into the city for the party as well.

I hope everyone has a good weekend.

THEIVING THURSDAY

 photo image13_zps64a48e1e.png

Today's word is HOT

Thank you Brenda for continuing your blog.

Are you Hot, hot, hot? What a great song and you hear it a lot in the Caribbean. I do not like hot weather especially when there is high humidity. It is easier to put on warmer clothes than to take off clothes because of the heat. Thankfully we did not have a really hot summer.

Does anyone remember “Hot Pants”? They were all the craze in the 70’s. I had several pair however I couldn’t wear them now. They went along with the mini skirt and “go-go” boots.

I like “hot” tea as opposed to iced tea. When I travel to see my Charleston grandchildren I have to be distinctive. Of course all or the grandchildren love their little tea parties at Grammy’s.

I am also not a fan of hot and spicy foods. I prefer sweet things instead. Sour isn’t my choice either.

Am I too old to look at men who are “hot”? I can only look these days and most of the ones I see are getting old, however even seniors can be “hot”.

Let’s hope no one gets a “hot” fever this winter. If you do remember the saying: “Feed a cold, starve a fever!” Do you take flu shots?

This has been a hot topic!

WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE

1. On Thursday we pause to remember a dark day in history-9/11. Will you mark it in some special way?

I was still working when this tragedy happened. I was the only office to have a tv so everyone came to my office for updates. One of my colleagues had a daughter working in New York at the time so we worried on her account. My girlfriend’s company also had dealings with New York so we were very distressed. I won’t do much to celebrate except to remember those who were lost.

2. Do you ever/still...listen to an actual radio? Watch a videotape (VCR)? Look up a number in a phonebook? Refer to a paper map while traveling? Set an alarm on an alarm clock as opposed to your phone?

Yes we listen to a radio in the car and if I am working around my bedroom I will put on the radio. No we do not use the VCR since it broke and we can’t get it fixed. I have boxes of VCR movies which I can’t get rid of. No I use the internet to look up telephone numbers. Yes we use a paper map when we travel. D H is the navigator and he has many map books. He calls them MPS. Yes if I have to set an alarm it is on my clock radio not my phone.

3.  Is it ever a good idea to discuss religion or politics with people you don't know?

In all of our travels we try to avoid politics and religion however our American acquaintances want to talk about our medical and the mayor of our city has made a spectacle of himself and is on the talk show circuit so politics does come up in our conversations.

4. What's a dish you haven't eaten all summer, but come September find yourself craving? Have you made it yet this month?

D H and I saw pepper squash in the supermarket yesterday and D H thinks he will try it on the BBQ>

5. What's something you know nothing about?

I am not very good when it comes to using the new technology.

6. September is Classical Music Month. Do you like classical music? If so, what's your favorite piece?

Yes I love classical music. Beethoven is my favourite composer and I love “moonlight sonata” as well as “Ode to Joy”.

7. What's the oldest thing you own?

I have some of my grandmother’s jewellry as well as my grade school watch and ring. I was going to say my husband but I do have things older than him.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I have been very frustrated lately because my blogging friends have stopped their blogs. I am no proficient enough to start my own topic so I am thankful that Joyce is continuing to feed my habit.

I have also started a little job. It isn’t really work and it doesn’t require too many skills. Our neighbour across the street has gone back to school and needs someone to get her 2 children on the school bus in the morning. I told her in the summer that I would be a back up if she needed help. Well her regular helper is away for the next couple of weeks so the children are coming to me in the morning. The first day they just watched tv however yesterday we played chalk on the sidewalk and had a wonderful time. Today I going to get the bubbles out. Tough job but someone has to do it.

TUESDAY COFFEE CHAT

Time out for Mom

Unfortunately Leslie has not put up her Coffee Chat this week. She promised to return in September. I miss her.

A lot of the bloggers that I follow seem to have left the blogging world. Many of the bloggers I follow are young and have families. Some are teachers who use their blogs for their students. Many have blogged about their journeys through good times and bad.

I am going to have to fins other memes to attach myself to. I guess I just have more time than some bloggers especially since I am retired.

Hopefully Leslie will get back into the habit because I enjoyed writing for her meme and hopefully people who read my blog enjoyed it as well.

MEET ME ON MONDAY

Acting Balanced

Welcome to Monday Quiz About Me - hosted by Heather & Wayne from Acting Balanced.  We are continuing to answer questions together.  Judy from Retired-not-Tired wanted us to reinstate #MQAM, so I challenged her to write this week's questions...

Here are the Questions:

1. I have heard the term"fummer" being used lately. Is it fall-like or summer-like in your neighbourhood?

We have definitely had some fall-like days. We have noticed some of the leaves are changing colour.

2. The astrological sign for September is "Virgo" what is yours?

I am a Pisces and D H is Leo.

3. The kids are back in school do you have your routine as well?

Our routine is out of whack at the moment because my pool classes as well as our dance classes are on hold.

4. Sunday was "National Grandparent Day". Did you honour your grandparents?

No! My grandparents have passed on and my grandchildren honour us on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

And here is my 5th Question:

Do you decorate for”Fall”?

FRIDAY FRAGMENTS & FOUR FILL IN FUN

Half-Past Kissin' Time

Feeling Beachie

This week’s co-host is Tami from pretty purplexing – she came up with the last two statements

The statements:

  1. If I stay healthy then I can enjoy me retirement.
  2. Playing cards reminds me of my days at the cottage.
  3. I think of my school days when I see the children walking past our house on their way to school.
  4. A wonderful marriage is the most special thing my husband has given me.

The first week of September is set to be put into the record books. It has been an easy week. It has been a pleasure watching the children go back to school. Grandson E and granddaughter F both started school for the first time this year. They both go to school in the mornings. E wasn’t sure about going every day because last year he only went on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. he loves the idea now and can hardly wait to play with his friends. F was also excited because her best friend T is in her class and she really likes her teacher.

In the meantime D H and I have been going for a morning walk because the afternoons have been quite warm. A heat alert has also been put into place for today. It is the first one this summer. To quote the weatherman “We were cool when should have hot and we are hot when we should be cooling down”. My girlfriend B has coined the phrase “Fummer” for this time of year. We are starting to see the leaves turning and are missing some of the birds.

Today is Mother’s birthday! Happy birthday Mom! She is expecting a very busy day with lots of phone calls. She is also going out to lunch with my brother. We celebrated earlier when we visited last week.

My daughter H is considering giving up her blog. With all of the children in school she wants to diversify. This may mean the end of her weekly meme. She got me started but all good things must come to an end. We shall see.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY

Book it!

 photo image13_zps64a48e1e.png

I am joining Brenda to ponder again!

Today's word is BOOK!

I love reading books. Books have a cover and pages with writing on them.  You can hold them in your hand and carry them in your purse. You can read them anywhere and at any time. They are very useful when you have to wait in a doctor’s office or hospital. My children learned early to carry a book with them. Now of course they want to read a book on their kindle or ipad. They are missing out on so much.

I love to read the books from the library and especially on a cruise ship. They even have Book Clubs on the ships. Which reminds me it is time to book our winter cruise. We are just waiting for a good deal. We are also going to book a fall cruise which will 50 days long and travel from Fort Lauderdale to the Mediterranean where we will visit Greece and Malta.

Have you ever written a book? My mother has. She wants me to write a book as well. It is her legacy and tells the stories of her growing up. Tomorrow is her birthday and she could write another book with more adventures.

Since the computer plays an important role in our lives today I wonder if our children will ever know what a journal is or even a diary. No one writes things down anymore. They just type them into a computer.

I still write on a calendar when I book appointments for my hair, doctor, dentist or social events. Do you?

I could write a book about books but I will leave the rest to you.

WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE

I am joining Joyce for this week’s Hodgepodge. She does a wonderful job of making up the questions.

1.  What's something you wanted to do this summer that you never got around to actually doing?

I never got a chance to go on a river cruise or even a lake cruise. We were just too busy. Maybe next year!

2. Share a favorite memory of your own back -to-school days as a child.

I always enjoyed being part of the choir in high school. We entered the Kiwanis Festival every year and won lots of medals. The festival culminated in a concert in a gorgeous music hall. I will always remember those competitions.

3.  What's one chore or daily task you prefer doing 'old-school' ?

I would say the last chore we do old-school is make the bed otherwise most things involve a machine such as laundry, dish washing and even vacuum cleaning.

4.  Share something you've learned in life through the 'school of hard knocks'.

K I S S – keep it simple stupid. Don’t over complicate things.

5.  As a child, did you mostly bring or buy your lunch for school? What was your favorite thing to find in your lunchbox?

We lived across the street from the school so we came home for lunch every day, even in high school. My favourite treats were my mother’s butter tarts and her chocolate chip cookies.

1. I am a knitter.

I hope some of the other blog followers will link up with us on Mondays. Thanks again to Joyce for hosting this blog.
