MEMORY MONDAY

My mother has written her memoirs and has been after me to write mine. I have been resisting for a while however I am creating Memory Monday to help me along. Come join me with your own memories. Each week will be a different prompt to encourage the writing of your memories. Link your memories and share them with everyone.

Our prompt is: More Vacation Memories

The children reminded me of our wonderful trip that we took with their grandparents when they were just 4, 5 and 6 years old. We travelled across Canada in their motorhome. We went out west for my father’s family reunion. It was wonderful to see the children’s reactions.

One of their favourite places to visit was Kekabeca Falls which is on Lake Superior. At the reunion the children met their many great aunts and uncles as well as many, many cousins.

When we weren’t travelling we would stop at the local parks so the children could swing and just play.

We flew home so the children could start school.

Another memorable road trip was to Michigan in 1989. Our intention was to visit Freankemeuth for its Christmas store. On the way the children kept thinking we were lost because all they could see was trees from the back windows of the car. When they did see something it was the MacDonald’s arches high in the air. They coined the phrase “We must be near civilization because there is a MacDonald’s in the area.

On our way we shopped in Birch Run which had a huge outlet mall. This was the first time we had ever been to an outlet mall. We left a lot of our money there and filled the trunk with goodies. Our drive to Frankemeuth was delayed because there was a 6 mile long line of traffic to get into the town so we turned around and visited a town we had passed through. The town was having a street sale and it was wonderful. One of the first stops found me buying a 6 foot Santa on a stick. We carried it through town and attracted a lot of attention. It was also the start of my stick decorations for the front lawn.

We did make it to Frankenmeuth the next day. The Christmas store was everything we expected and then some. We had dinner in the German restaurant and drove home. Now when we travel we know we will never be lost if we can find a MacDonald’s.
