FRIDAY FRAGMENTS–NO FILL INS

Happy Black Friday! We are on the Atlantic Ocean again and heading for home. We have 6 sea days in a row and there are lots of activities to keep us busy. In fact I am being Clubbed to death. I have joined the writer’s club which requires at least one page of writing every day. We are receiving wonderful tips and starting sentences. We also have to use 4 words in our stories.

The other club I have is the Knitter’s Club and I have been shown a better way to sew my sweaters together. Hopefully they will be done by the time I get home. Lastly I am participating in the book club. Our new book is The Color of the Dog Running Away  by Richard Gwyn. So far the discussion have been interesting. The previous book The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver was not well-liked however I enjoyed it. I think because I am Canadian and the book had a little of American history references. Just wonderful to read books I wo0uld never have heard of.

Besides all of the morning activities we have our dancing in the Ocean Bar with the Neptunes who are much improved since they got a new bass player. We have had some impromptu concerts with Dana on the piano as well as dancing with Matt in the Crow’s Nest.

Yesterday we enjoyed a wonderful turkey dinner in the well-decorated dining room.

THRIVING THURSDAY

We are headed home. We will take 6 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Our last stop was in Funchal (Madeira). WE took the Hop ON, Hop Off bus around for a tour of the city. We had a great over-view. We hopped off for a cable car ride to Monte. We sampled the Madeira wines and honey cakes and biscuits while at the top. Here are some of the views we saw.

THOUGHTFUL TUESDAY

We have had some wonderful entertainment on board the ship. One of our favourites is the Indonesian Crew Show. The kids are our room stewards, dining room servers as well as our Lido workers. They work 10 – 12 hours a day taking care of us and then they practice to entertain us at 11 pm when there work is done.

Here are some of the pictures from last nights show.

SUNDAY IN THE CITY

Our cities have been our Ports of call while on our 42 day cruise. Yesterday we were in Gibraltar and today we will visit Cadiz, Spain.  We are at day 31 so will soon be heading home. Just 11 days to go.

Here is the Rock of Gibraltar as seen on our way in.

01

We walked into town and rode up the rock in a cable car. On our way to the cable car we passed through the main gates into the town square where I received the keys to the city.

FRIDAY FRAGMENTS–NO FILL IN

Unfortunately I cannot get the Friday Fill In while I am on the ship. I miss it and will return when I get home. In the meantime I am sharing fragments of our trip. One of the best parts of being on the ship is being able to get unobstructed views of the skies. Here is a spectacular shot of the moon over a volcanic island.

We also get some amazing sunrises.

THRIVING THURSDAY

We have walked many cities in Spain and Italy in the last 28 days. One of the things we find most common is the proliferation of Pastry shops. There are a lot of sweeties available.

WORDLESS WEDNESDAY–NO HODGE PODGE

A not so wordless Wednesday! If anyone has been watching the news you may have heard of a cyclone that hit the island of Sardinia. Fortunately we missed the storm. It would have been our Port of Call for today. The wise captain kept us in Palermo, Sicily and we will have an extra sea day instead. The waves were expected to be 23 feet high in the strait between Sicily and Sardinia. Unfortunately the island was flooded with 18 inches of water in 90 minutes. We thank the captain for keeping us safe and dry. We had a lovely walk around Palermo and DH took some wonderful pictures.

THOUGHTFUL TUESDAY

Yesterday we travelled to Mount Etna and a medieval town called Taomina. Our ship was docked in Messina, Sicily.

DH was disappointed that Mount Etna did not have an eruption however we did get ash on the roadways because it had spewed lave the day before. Several roads were closed because of a collapsed bridge as well as a rock slide. We got to 2000 feet on Mount Etna. We had lunch in the medieval town of Taomina which was once occupied by the Greeks.

MEET ME ON MONDAY

Yesterday we had a tour which started in Sorrento and took us into the hills surrounding the city. It was an incredible tour.

IMG_8920

We could see the island of Capris.

IMG_8935

The bus took us up the mountain on hair pin turns. The cars had to make room for us however the views were worth it.

04

We could see our ship waiting for us in the harbour.

Tomorrow we hope to get close to Mount Etna.
