SUNDAY IN THE CITY

Let’s travel the world together!

Unknown Mami

We are celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary today with friends and family. My bridesmaid couldn’t make it however her flowers will be at centre stage.

IMG_6003

I carried yellow roses at my wedding and she remembered.

My neighbour also gave us a bouquet of flowers

To my darling husband thank you for 40 wonderful years and may we have another 40 together.

FRIDAY FOUR FILL IN FUN

Welcome to the weekly Follow Friday Four Fill-in Fun Blog Hop! with Hilary G.

Photobucket

This week’s statements:

1. If you make me a meal I will be forever grateful because I don’t cook.

2. Sometimes I am very happy to be a grandmother who is retired and can spend time with them.

3. Driving in new areas makes me nervous however DH is a fabulous navigator and can get us anywhere.

4. I would love to see Australia and New Zealand because I have been fascinated with them for a long time.

THRIVING THURSDAY

Welcome to Pondering with a Purpose –with Brenda Youngerman

Today's prompt is: Swing

My first thought is “swing dance” because we are ballroom dancers. There are several types of swing dancing – East Coast, West Coast, and Jive, Single step and Triple step. Our preference is Single step however we do a mean triple.

Our grandchildren love to swing. The newest baby T loves his swing. It goes sideways as well as back and forth and is a great little baby sitter when Mommy needs a set of hands.

I am also reminded of the song “Swinging on a star”. It was sung by Bing Crosby in “Going my way” as well as “the Bells of Saint Mary”.

Do you swing into action when something needs to be done? Do you have a swing in your step when you’re happy?

I would love if you swing by to comment on my blog.

WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE

1. Summertime is a season of reunions, weddings, and other family celebrations and gatherings...are any of the above on your calendar in the next two months?

All of the above. Our daughter and her family are here for the month of June from South Carolina so we have fit in baby showers, baptisms, and a 40th wedding anniversary party.

2. June is National Iced Tea Month...are you an iced tea drinker? If so, how do you like yours (sweet, flavoured, etc)?

Since my daughter lives in South Carolina I have become a sweet tea lover. Hubby likes his unsweetened. It is also always available of the cruise ships and since I don’t drink a lot of pop or soda it is a refreshing change from water.

3. When were you last nervous?  Looking back, was the 'event' actually nerve-worthy?

I am not really a nervous person so I can’t think of a particular event.

4. The bristle toothbrush was invented in China on June 26, 1498...not sure how that date was pinned down so precisely but, on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being sick to your stomach and 1 being not at all, how nervous do you feel when you're headed to the dentist?  Do you see your dentist twice a year?

I am not a big dentist goer and hubby wears false teeth so we don’t see a dentist very often.

5. What's making news in your town this week?

Our mayor is always a popular figure and is in the news almost every day. Not a voter and I find him to be a ridiculous figure.

6. Curtains, drapes, blinds...your window treatment of choice? Are there any bare windows in your house? Is that by choice or because you haven't gotten around to covering them?

We are pretty much blind users.

7. Summertime is officially here (in the Northern hemisphere anyway)...what one song is a must-have on your summer playlist?

As most of you know D H and I are ballroom dancers and when we attend a regular dance we can always count on Santana being on the playlist so we often ask for “Smooth” so that we can dance a cha cha.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I may not get around to visiting as many blogs as I would like as the visit by my daughter H and her family is winding up. There are sleepovers with cousins planned as well as a big family trip to Centre Island if the rain holds out. It has been a pleasure watching all of the grandchildren play together and interact. Just keeping up with them has been enough exercise. Watching the children grow is the best gift a grandmother can have. Even baby  T isn’t a newborn anymore. He now smiles when you talk to him and has started to play with toys. Tummy time here we come.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Family week! I have included pictures of the church where baby T was christened on the weekend.

2. Do you play card games?  Which ones are your favourite?

Love cards! Have played card games all of my life and taught all of my children. Right now we have a new game that we learned while cruising called “Hand and Foot”. Our dining room table has become a permanent card table.

3. What is your favourite flavour of Birthday Cake?

As you know I love chocolate anything so chocolate cake is my pick.

No I am not an amusement ride lover. The best I do is the carousel and the ferris wheel.

THRIVING THURSDAY

Welcome to Pondering with a Purpose – with Brenda Youngerman

Today's prompt is: Slip

Great choice of words! I was just thinking the other day as I was cleaning out my drawers that no one wears slips anymore. We used to wear slips to keep skirts from clinging and to hide the unmentionables. Today the new fabrics work without needing a slip and the unmentionables are sometimes worn on the outside anyway.

At my age I now have to worry about slips and falls. I have a bigger fear of falling upstairs as opposed to slipping down them.

Because of the internet and online banking we no longer have to fill out a bank slip nor do we get a pay slip.

I often wonder where the time slips off to. How did I have time to work?

Of course I slip off my shoes and wear my slippers around the house.

I think I can slip into any conversation and keep it going.

Slip into this blog and visit others when you have time. I am going to slip away for some quiet time.

MEET ME ON MONDAY

Welcome to Monday Quiz About Me - hosted by Acting Balanced and Touristic

Acting Balanced

Here are the Questions:

1. June 17th is Eat Your Vegetables Day... do you need a special day to celebrate veggies? Your favourite veg?

My favourite vegetable is the potato. It can be served in so many ways – boiled, mashed, baked, scalloped or fried.

2. How did you spend your Father's Day?  Or for those who don't have Father's Day on June 16th, what did you do this weekend?

D H and I drove 4 1/2 hours to have lunch with my Mom and Dad. We gave him some new socks. I also asked questions about my Dad’s family before he forgets everything.

3. June 18th is National Splurge Day... if you were (are) going to participate what would/will you splurge on?

If I am going to splurge it would be on another cruise. This time to Australia and New Zealand. We still want to go!

4. What is the farthest you've ever traveled from home?

I guess travelling to Rome is the farthest from home although I have crossed the Arctic Circle and have been as far north as Norway.

My 5th question this week is ...

If you could be a contestant on a game show what game would you be on?

THRIVING THURSDAY

Welcome to Pondering with a Purpose – with Brenda Youngerman

Today's prompt is: Pill

Let me start by saying I take a pill to relieve my aches and pains however I don’t want to act like a pill. Acting like a pill is a pain for everyone around me. I try to take as few pills as possible especially from the doctor so I work on being healthy.

I also try to keep the pill off of my sweaters. Who wants a sweater full of fluff and pulls.

Does anyone remember the pill-box hat? Jackie Kennedy was famous for hers.

(taken from Google!)

Thanks for the memory!

WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE

1. What do you think makes a good dad?

A good Dad is a provider for his family, a great listener and a participant who leads his children to a better life.

2.  What's something you learned from your own father?

Believe it or not my father taught to take risks. You don’t get anywhere without gambling a little. He started his own business and raised 4 children. Of course it was my mother who kept us on track.

3. It's your birthday-what kind of cake will we be having?

My birthday cake would probably be an ice-cream cake. We are not big cake eaters.

4. When you're faced with a big decision are you more of a go with your gut type of person, or are you someone who reasons it all out, weighing the pros and cons?

Because of my answer in #2 I would go with my gut. Once I make a decision it is done.

5. June is National Dairy Month. What's your favourite dairy item? Most often purchased dairy item?

Milk is my favourite dairy item followed by ice cream. We purchase a lot of milk.

6. Explorer Jacques Cousteau was born on June 11, 1910....what's something you've recently discovered or something you'd like to explore?

I have discovered the joy of grandchildren and love retirement. I still have lots of places in the world to see especially if I can cruise there.

7. Are you typical of your generation?

Yes! I am a baby boomer. We have lived in our house for 37 years and have been married for 40.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Our oldest daughter H and her family are here for the month of June. It is hectic and a lot of fun. On Sunday we had all 6 grandchildren for the afternoon. Talk about busy! There is definitely no sitting in babysitting. The children haven’t played together since Christmas but got along famously. We couldn’t have done it without the help of our oldest granddaughter R. She is a very mature young lady and is growing more beautiful every day. Every day is busy so blogging has taken a back seat. I apologize for not getting around like I used to.

We have managed to take the time to smell the flowers. These are growing in our garden.

1. June 10th is Iced Tea Day - do you drink iced tea?  Sweet or unsweet?  Flavoured?

Yes I drink iced tea. It is a tradition I started when we began visiting the southern states. It has to be “sweet”.

2. What would be an essential for you to survive a long airplane flight?

An aisle seat preferably at the front and not near a smelly person.

3. How do you explain wanting an iron to someone who does not speak English?

That would be strange because I don’t iron at all however if I had to I would gesture the action of ironing.

4. Should smoking be allowed in restaurants?

Absolutely not!  If I had me way smoking would not even be allowed in public spaces especially around children. Anyone who works with children should be non-smokers.

For my 5th question – What is your favourite mode of transportation?

THRIVING THURSDAY

Welcome to Pondering with a Purpose – hosted by Brenda Youngerman

Today's prompt is: Roll

I am ready to roll with Brenda today as we look at all of the ways to use the word roll.

Are you ready to Rock and Roll? Would you like a roll with your dinner? How about a roll along a lazy river? Shall we merrily roll along?

There is also “role” as in a part in a play. What role do you play in your children’s lives or even your grandchildren?

Do you roll coins to take to the bank or is it just loose change? Can you roll around in bed or down a hill?

My grandchildren love to do somersault rolls when there is an open space. I could roll a ball to my grandson when he can sit up.

Of course we could Roll out the Barrel and have a barrel of fun.

These days everyone has to “roll with the punches” as life keeps us on our toes.

Whatever roll or role you have today Have a good one!

WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE

Here are the questions for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge hosted by Joyce at

1. Have you learned more from success or failure? Explain.

Success because failure is not an option!

2.  What did you call your grandparents when you were growing up? If you have children, what do they call your parents? If you have grandchildren, what do they call you?

I was fortunate to have a set of grandparents on my mother’s side and I called them Grandma and Grandpa. My children had 2 sets and called my parents Grandma and Grandpa and still do and the other set were Oma and Opa to reflect their German background. All of my grands now call us Grammy and Grampy although my oldest granddaughter started out with Judy-lady and Fred-man.

3.  You're invited to a luau.  In keeping with that theme, what dish will you bring to share?

Nothing with pineapple as I am highly allergic to it. Probably my chocolate macaroons because they are full of coconut and everyone loves them. They are also no bake so the house doesn’t get hot.

4. Besides Jesus, what one person's life story do you think everyone should know about?

Everyone should know their family history. Hubby is suggesting I get as much family history discovered before my parents pass away.

5. "Don't sweat the small stuff." Agree or Disagree? Why?

I absolutely agree. If you don’t sweat the small stuff even the big issues become smaller.

6.  June is National Rivers Month. When were you last on a river? What's the prettiest river you've ever seen? What's a river you'd like to see?

I was on a river cruise last fall with our retirement group. We were on a paddle wheeler and saw the autumn colours.
7.  Speaking of rivers-paddling, fishing, swimming, or bird watching safely from the shore? Which activity would you choose? Yes-you have to choose.

I would chose swimming and bird watching. Not much of a fisherman nor a canoer.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

We are preparing for our daughter and her family’s arrival on Friday. They will be staying for a month and we have lots of activities planned. It may be their last summer trip since the oldest granddaughter will probably work next summer. We will make the most of it while we can.
