SATISFACTION SATURDAY

This is the time of the week where I tell you has satisfied I am as a retired and not working person.

I want this post is a happier post than last week.  Everyone is on the mend.  Hopefully the Get Well cards helped.  We need some down weeks to appreciate the good things in life.

I had to satisfaction of visiting with E and F this week.  It will be a challenge when they are not so close to us. E stayed over night last Saturday so Mommy could go to Aunt C’s birthday party.  We then went to brunch with all of the girls to celebrate Aunt C’s birthday as well. Unfortunately F is still too young to sleep over. F can now say “Hi” and wave her hand.  She gets the biggest toothy smile when she does it.  Thank you girls for making grammy smile a little more.

I also had lunch with the last 3 surviving members of the “Friendship Group”.  The group started when The United Church formed the UCW 50 years ago.  These ladies were part of that original group.  The group moved from St Stephen’s United Church to Riverdale United and then back into the homes of the members.  The group has put on many fundraisers such as bazaars, teas, fashion shows and card parties.  To me they were my support group when my mother retired to winter in the South.  My mother has known these ladies for the same 50 years.  i am amazed at the bonds that have been formed.  It takes work to stay together and we ill get together in the fall.

D H is still getting me in shape for our big cruise in July (see the countdown clock). We took advantage of the great weather on Wednesday and took a 2 and half hour walk.  We also are taking more uphill and downhill walks since Norway is full of mountains. Speaking of our trip we have been commenting on the Holland America Roll Call about this cruise. We are meeting people a head of time.

I am satisfied with my week and I hope was just as good or better.

FIVE QUESTION FRIDAY

It's that time of the week, where Mama M poses 5 Questions and I answer them:

1. Do you make your kids finish all the food on their plates?

As a grandmother who doesn’t cook I allow the grandchildren to make their own choices of food.  I have to say most of them are good eaters. I encourage them to try everything since their taste buds are just developing.  Our youngest granddaughter is just starting on real food and she does have a mind of her own.  So the short answer is no.

2. Do you give an allowance?

When my children were growing up we did give an allowance however we also ensured that they had all of their wants met.  That was the reason I went back to work.

3. Do you actually park your car in the garage?

No we have a parking spot in the back of the house.  Since we retired we gave up street parking which used to cost us about $240. a year.

4. What is one food you will NEVER cook?

I don’t cook because D H is a fabulous cook however if I did cook I would NEVER cook LIVER

5. Do you have anything exciting planned for the summer?

Absolutely!!  We have our daughter H and her family W, R, L, and E coming for about 6 weeks that will keep us hopping as the boys love the parks around our house.  Our son M and his family are moving to a new house to be closer to work. And FINALLY we have our fabulous cruise which is being counted down.

Now go and see what others have to say when they link up at:

THRIVING THURSDAY

My handle is retired not tired however I feel like I on vacation.  I know I am being selfish because everything is about me and I love it.  Being with the grandchildren is about my gratification.  They provide me with hours of pleasure.  E just loves my jewellery box.  Her favourite is the crystal butterfly.  F loves my bling as well.  The boys L and E are less fascinated however my rings and watches catch their eyes.  My oldest granddaughter R who will 14 this weekend has also caught on to this fetish.

I just finished taking a long bubble bath and I finished another book.  My walks now include the library where I can get my hands on more books.  D H has a purpose for my walks as in preparing for our trip this summer however I am selfish enough to make them about me.

Even D H is all about me.  He makes my lunches and dinners.  He ensures I have time on the computer. He takes my pictures for my blog as I drag him all around the city for my selfish desires.

So I may be retired but I am treating life as a joy and am on vacation enjoying life.

Retirement has me thriving every minute.

TRAVEL TUESDAY

D H and I are getting anxious for our next cruise in July.  D H is researching the Ports of Call for specific amusements.  We are going to be on the Holland America “Maasdam” which will leave from Boston.  We will travel up the East Coast to Newfoundland with a stop in Cornerbrook.  We have actually been to this wonderful city  and are looking forward to meeting with a former neighbour.

The next port will be Red bay, Labrador which will be new to us. We also have stops in Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Amsterdam, England, Ireland, and Faroe Islands. We have seen some beautiful pictures of the scenery especially the fjords of Norway. D H expects to make me a camera widow as he captures the beauty around us.

We expect to do a lot of walking so we are in training for uphill and downhill treks to see the incredible sights.

I hope you are getting as excited as we are.  You can check out our “Voyage of the Vikings” on the Holland America website.

SATISFACTION SATURDAY (PART 2)

This has been a roller coaster week.  We have had our ups and downs and very thankful to be retired.  We shared the loss of a grandfather, father-in-law and neighbour who had lived a long and generous life. We shared our grief with the family we are very close to.

It was good to see everyone again however we prefer the happier times of weddings and birthdays.

I caught up with my friends in the office when I attended the retiree luncheon on Tuesday. I shared my scrapbook with them. I promise to make one of our cruise.

I empathize with the changes that have taken place. Downsizing sucks. Their new work environment is making everyone wish for an early retirement.

We also had bad news regarding W’s parents and the trip they had planned to take for our granddaughter R’s birthday.  They have to stay home as they have found something in the heart test.

Let’s hope it not too serious and they will be able to travel again soon.

Our best friends’ father D is hopefully going to recover from his heart attack that put him hospital last week.

Again we send our thoughts and prayers for a speeding recovery.

With all of the bad news and the health issues this week we are glad we made the decision to take life at a slower pace and the world around us.

We made the last payment on our 35 day cruise this week.

What ever you chose to do “Do it soon”!  Life is too Precious!

SATISFACTION SATURDAY

I would like to start this day of wishing my middle daughter C a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY?

Dad and I love you very much.  You have come a long way! Enjoy your party tonight!

TRAVEL TUESDAY

While we are waiting to embark on our next major trip we have also travelled close to home.  There are as many interesting places in our own backyard so to speak.  We live in a major city and it is fun to travel to some of the smaller towns and villages surrounding us. D H of course always has his camera at the ready.

He took these pictures from the car:

SUNDAY IN THE CITY

D H took the pictures of course.  This is our Botanical Gardens. It is a great park for walking and we always see different sights in all of the seasons.  I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

SATISFACTION SATURDAY

Has it been a satisfactory week?  Yes! We travelled to see my parents and celebrated my father’s 85th birthday. We took a 3 hour walk yesterday in preparation for our trip in July.  We are looking for adventurous walks that combine uphill as well as flat areas. It was great to be able to see the changes that are happening in our neighbourhood.  When you are in the car you just get little glimpses.

We also met W’s parents so we were able to save a phone call.  They will be going down to see W’s family and celebrated R’s 14th birthday.  We will pack up dresses and shoes for R as she needs them for her graduation.  We visited the closets of Aunt C and cousin P for appropriate dresses and shoes. By talking on Skype she has picked out 4 dresses to try on.

We also celebrated the kick off of spring with a dance.  It was great to spend an evening with our friends and enjoy some great dancing and desserts. The last time we had all been together was at the Christmas dance.

Next week will be busy as we approached C’s birthday.

I hope everyone can say that their week was as satisfying as ours.  Have a great weekend!

FIVE QUESTION FRIDAY

image

1. Who mows your grass?

D H cuts the grass – we have a postage stamp front yard and the grass is like a picture frame around the circle of flowers

2. Do you have a picture wall or picture gallery in your house (show us! <--- my addition to the question)?

Yes we have pictures mostly in our bedrooms

3. What book has influenced your thinking the most? Or, what blog? (I want to read what gets people thinking!)

The book that has influenced me the most is a memories book written by mother.  She has an interesting way with the events that happened to her and her family.

4. Do you have allergies? If so, how do you handle it this time of year?

My allergies are year round such as eggs, pineapple and seafood although I am bothered by spring flowers such as Easter lilies and daffodils.  I just avoid them.

5. What's your go to meal to cook in an hurry?

Macaroni and cheese.  D H is the cook in the family but I make a mean macaroni and cheese from scratch.

I would like to add to my blog today a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY FATHER.  He turns 85 years young.

THRIVING THURSDAY

We are recovering from a busy Easter weekend.  We enjoyed the sunshine and getting together with our family.  D H cooked his wonderful turkey and all of the trimmings.  Sorry I can’t offer you a piece of apple pie as there is none left. I do have a few red velvet cupcakes left over. We do not have the Easter bunny at our house anymore so it was quiet and we left out the chocolate.  Good for our diets and our healthy lifestyle.

We made our first visit to see my parents after the long winter.  They live in an area where they really felt the winter weather.  They had lots of snow and ice.  This meant my Mom could not get out as often as she likes.  Dad of course is happy sitting in his comfortable chair and watching TV.  The only bad spot they had tis winter was the temperature in their apartment.  They kept losing heat and my mother caught a cold and when you are in your 80s you don’t bounce back quickly.  Otherwise they are both in fairly good health.

Mom made a list of jobs she needed done by us.  D H organized all of the pictures in her computer and set up the blogs from my daughter, my son-in-law and myself.  He also repaired a table.  I was lucky enough to share a paraffin wax treatment on my hands with my mother.  If you ever get the chance to have one it is wonderful.  The hot wax is put on your hands and you wait for it to cool down.  It helps with sore fingers and moisturizes well. We also helped put together a new chair for my Dad.  We had a wonderful visit.

I also had lunch out with 2 of my retired friends. It is wonderful that we have kept in touch as so many work place friendship seem to end when someone leaves work.  We have a lot in common as we are grandmothers to young children. We all still active and our involved in our communities. It was a great visit.

We are thriving and we are not missing work.  I don’t think I could do so much if I was working.  It has been great being able to reacquaint ourselves with friends and family.  The benefit of being retired as we take time to reflect and look forward.

D H strikes again.  His motto is “Have camera, will travel”

and

He calls it art meets nature.

TRAVEL TUESDAY

As I mentioned last week D H and I went to 2 travel shows.  The travel companies specialize in all-inclusive holidays. They include the air fare, the pick ups from the house and all of the meals and tours.  They do all of the planning for you for a price.  They have all of the worry and supply all of the fun. Both companies are Canadian and family owned.

The first show was with “Jerry Van Dyke” tours. They offer quality, value and peace of mind.  They have made arrangements with families all over the world to help them.  They really emphasized their river cruises.  They only travel during the day.  Their boats are smaller so that guests can stay on the sun deck as they cruise through the river.  They work out to about $500 a day per person.  They do not cover health insurance.  Their show was informative however the coffee was not very good.  If we win the lottery we will definitely be able to afford their services.

The second show was with “Denure” tours. They specialize in bus trips and discussed their North American packages.  They also work with “Holland America” for their cruises.  We liked their itinerary.  They also took their time when they travelled so the paces were slower.  Their trips were about $300 a day per person.  One advantage is we could still gain our mariner points on the cruises. They served tea, coffee and muffins.

Both companies have given us a lot to think about.  We know where we can plan for the future particularly when driving our own car is not possible.  These 2 companies are on the web so if you are interested you can look them up.

Monday Quiz About Me

1. Which three words would describe you best?

Outgoing, Talkative and Loving

2. Describe your favourite place in the whole world.

A cruise ship would have to be my favourite place.  I love someone else driving and appreciate the luxury treatment and the wonderful food.  The ports of call just make it interesting.

3. Sunsets, Sunrises or Full Moons?

I love them all. D H has mostly a collection of sunsets and sunrises but I used to love to walk in the country during a full moon because you could leave the flashlight at home.

IMG_0436 Fuse

This is a Sunrise.

IMG_0713

.This is a Sunset.

4. If you were to get reincarnated what or who would you want to come back as?

I always said I would be a taxi driver in my next life. Oh wait! I have been Mom’s taxi. The only difference I would get paid.

Thank you to acting balanced for hosting this;

SUNDAY IN THE CITY

Everyone knows that Christmas decorations are seen everywhere. Hallowe’en is also very popular and now we have Easter decorating.  We came across this house in our travels and D H capture it with his camera.  HAPPY EASTER everyone!!

SATISFACTION SATURDAY

Another week has come and gone.  This week was busy.  We attended 2 Travel shows which I will share in my Travel Tuesday blog.  We enjoyed a leisurely Good Friday.  It was wonderful to see so many young families out walking and enjoying the parks because of the holiday.  There was no shopping except at the little boutiques and coffee shops.  The weather of course has been glorious.

We also had the opportunity to look after our granddaughters E and F.  The best part of the evening was the bubble bath in Grammy’s old fashioned tub.  F would try to stand up and I would say “Let’s get dried off” and F would sit back down and giggle.  The girls love their baths.  E got to stay over night and Daddy picked her up at 7:30 this morning.  F had a walk around the block with Grampi but went home with Mommy and Daddy.

We are looking forward to our Easter dinner tomorrow and maybe the trip to see the Easter Parade depending on the weather.  D H is doing the cooking tomorrow and I will bake the apple pie and Red Velvet cupcakes today.

We are still enjoying our retirement and we are not tired yet.

THRIVING THURSDAY

One of the hardest parts of being retired has been the pay cut.  All of my cheques now come at the end of the month and they are always the same amount.  While planning for this retirement we took into consideration that our spending habits would have to change.

We started early on to look for ways to ensure a happy and healthy retirement with less money.  Fortunately we have more time as we are not rushing off to a job each day.  D H and I are getting accustomed to that extra time without the extra money. The price of gas went up to $1.40 a litre so we are parking the car more.  The good new is that we are walking more.

We walk to the grocery stores, the bank and the library.  We have stopped buying books because we can get them free at the library.  We are so glad that the librarians are back to work after their 11 day strike.  We take advantage of the senior’s discount at the grocery stores as well. We have more time to prepare our meals so we don’t have to buy as many convenience foods.

All in all we are developing a much healthier lifestyle since we are no longer working. So we are thriving even with the price of gas going out of this world.  We just have to be a little more frugal so that we can keep up our travel budget.

TRAVEL TUESDAY

Although we have completed our last trip we are always planning for the next one. Our most successful trips have taken lots of research.  This week D H and I are going to 2 travel shows, one by Denure Tours and the other is Jerry Van Dyke Tours.  We enjoy these shows because we get to meet lots of other travellers.  They share their good times and bad times. We also get a glimpse of different itineraries.

Besides the travel shows we also use the internet which has become a valuable resource as you bloggers already know.  One of our best sites has been cruise critic.com because of course cruising is our first option. When we are not cruising we love car trips mainly because we dislike flying.

From our countdown calendar you can that we only have 98 days to plan this trip.  D H has been researching Boston as we will be there for 3 days before we get on the ship.  He tried contacting the Boston information centre for sightseeing in their city.  They want us to pay $10 plus shipping charges for this information.  Their website is also very lax.  So I am asking my blog readers if they have information about Boston.  If you do could you send it to my email address: judy.retirednottired@gmail.com. Of course you can also leave a comment.

Today we were talking to a friend who gave us some great advice for Boston.  He had just returned from a visit with his wife.  He said the Hop on Hop off buses and the transit system were amazing.  He also mention that the drivers were extremely friendly and provided them with restaurant ideas as well as sights that were free.

We would greatly appreciate hearing from you.  Also if you information about other places we should visit please let us know.

MEET ME ON MONDAY

Based on the original Meet Me on Monday hosted by Java at Never Growing Old,

Here are today's Questions:

1. Did you prank, get pranked or ignore April Fool's Day?

No I did not pull a prank for April Fool’s Day however I did enjoy Heather’s on her blog.

2. What is the most unusual thing you have in your pantry or refrigerator right now?

I cleaned our fridge out before we started our travels this winter and have only restocked what we are using at the moment.  I do have a bottle of BBQ sauce that should have gone south with us. I don’t like that taste of it however our daughter H does.

3. If you were in the "Miss America" (or another) talent competition, what would your talent be?

I would probably want to play the piano as my singing voice is no longer in tune
4. What is one thing you miss about being a kid?

I miss our summers at the cottage.  My mother would pack us in the car as soon as school was dismissed and we would come the day before school started. They were the best times with my brother and 2 sisters.

5. If you HAD to change your name, what would you change it to?

When I meet people for the first time I always associate my name with Judy Garland however I was born on Elizabeth Taylor’s birthday so I think I would like to be called  Elizabeth.

SUNDAY IN THE CITY

D H has taken more spring flower pictures from our garden.  The poor things are looking for the sun which seems to be playing hide and go seek.  One day it is here and next day we have rain and even ice pellets.
